Tibi Electric Go Kart Conversion Project

Tibi Electric Go Kart Conversion Project

This thread discusses the story behind this Tibi Kart Electric conversion. Back in early 2012, I was itching to build another Electric Go Kart. My vision was an electric go kart:

  • that drifts and does nice sideways action.
  • that fits in the back of a Volvo 240 wagon (ie. 1800mm x 1100mm x 700mm).
  • light enough for me to be able to load it into my wagon on my own.
  • with at least 10 minutes running time on a single charge.
  • original budget of $1000.

For several months, I was looking to buy a used go kart chassis at a budget price. When this was becoming difficult to find, I started contemplating building my own chassis, but after around 6 months of persistent searching, I happened to speak to someone whose brother was selling his go kart. He rang his brother and got me some details including contact details. I rang the vendor and I liked what I heard so I drove up with my wagon ready to buy it. The rolling chassis was $250. It was a Tibi Kart frame and it was in good condition. The vendor gave up go karting 2 years earlier. I estimate the vendor was in his 60s. Whilst there, I bought all sorts of bits and pieces for a further $50 which was a bargain.

The waiting and searching had paid off. I had to remove one side pod and one rear wheel so that it would fit in my Volvo wagon. I had a fully loaded wagon and I was heading home with this new kart.

This was the very start of my second electric go kart conversion and there were lots more things to come.

This is Al Bunzel signing out.

P.S. Please come back to this post as I intend on add photos and linking to future posts that entail the conversion process of this go kart.
